Traveling Open Mats
Train together. Build camaraderie. Start Conversations
A stronger, more connected fire service
Our Traveling Open Mats bring firefighters together from departments across Colorado to train, build camaraderie, and create a stronger, more connected fire service. These events give us an opportunity to step outside the firehouse, leave rank and department boundaries behind, and spend time with people who understand the unique demands of the job.
Each open mat begins with a conversation about mental health and the importance of looking out for one another. We encourage firefighters to share experiences, challenges, or calls that have impacted them—but there is never any pressure to speak. The goal is simply to create an environment where honest conversations can happen naturally, among people who understand.
From there, we get to what brought us together in the first place: Jiu Jitsu. We teach a technique that everyone can work on together, regardless of experience level, and then open the mats for rounds. Whether it's someone's first time training or they've been on the mats for years, everyone is welcome.
At the end of the day, these open mats are about more than Jiu Jitsu. They're about building relationships, starting conversations, strengthening camaraderie, and creating a network of firefighters who continue to look out for one another long after the rounds and shifts are over.
